With there being a day in celebration for mothers, fathers, and even a day dedicated solely to celebrating the deliciousness of pretzels, it’s only right to have a day dedicated to the children in our life. On April 30 in Mexico, children are celebrated for their roles in society and their well-being.
What is Día de los Niños?
With a day dedicated to mothers and another day dedicated to fathers, it’s only right to have a day where we celebrate our favorite little humans that represent our future. On April 30, Children’s Day is celebrated in Mexico, a day dedicated to children and their importance in society and their well-being. This day is commemorated on different dates, depending on each country. Although April 30 is not the intentional date, there is a day recognized for children by the United Nations Organization, which is November 20.
What is the Origin of Día del Niño?
The day is dedicated to children. It all started with World War I when the war left many minors vulnerable and unsupported. After the war ended in 1925, Mexico participated in the Geneva Convention to protect children, and the president of the Mexican Republic, Álvaro Obregón dedicated April 30 as the date to celebrate the little ones in our lives.
The fundamental rights of children in Mexico are:
- Right to life
- Right to Food
- Education rights
- Right to health
- Right to freedom
- Right to identity
- Right to protection
According to historical documents, Children’s Day in Mexico was recognized on May 8, 1916, in the city of Tantoyuca, Veracruz. In addition to celebrating the day with sweets, parties, balloons, and colors, it is important to use this date to remind children that they have the right to health, protection, and education, regardless of what part of the world they were born in.
Beginning in 1996, this tradition grew through the efforts of various grassroots organizations, libraries, and universities to link El Día del Niño with language and literacy as a way to support children’s well-being.
Celebrations Across the Lone Star state
This year, Carlson Cares decided to hold a giveaway in celebration of Día del Niño on our Facebook pages, @carlsonlawfirm and @carlsonabogados. The giveaway lasted for two weeks, with families having a chance to participate in the giveaway by submitting a drawing demonstrating their children care about their communities and a video showing off their best dance moves. If an individual participated in both weeks, he or she was entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $200 gift card to their favorite pizza place.
In addition to our online celebration, Carlson Cares hosted its Party with a Purpose in its Baytown location on Saturday, April 30. The community celebrated with bilingual books, face painting provided by local artist Cecilia Vazquez of L’Frambue, and carnival-style games and concessions from All Summer Long, to celebrate the children in the Baytown community.
