WHAT: Carlson Cares volunteers from our San Antonio and Laredo offices volunteered for “Fun Day” at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Laredo-Webb County. Employees provided cupcakes and juice for the kids to celebrate the end of the school year. In addition, law firm employees helped children with arts and crafts and awarded a “Future Artist” certificate.
WHY: Child abuse and neglect can create trauma in children that impacts their cognitive, physical, social and emotional development—which can have lifelong effects. Research shows that children who experience abuse and neglect are predisposed to significant physical and mental health risks. However, these risks can be reduced when the work that organizations like the Children’s Advocacy Center of Laredo-Webb County is supported.
“Child abuse and child neglect are traumas that children without proper intervention can carry into their adult lives,” said Carlson Law Firm Partner Edna Elizondo. “This can create a lasting effect on our community. But showing these children that there is an entire community of people here who care about them is one way we can begin reversing the effects of adverse childhood experiences.”
