BAYTOWN, Texas- On Friday, March 31, Baytown community members joined The Carlson Law Firm for a fun evening of movie-watching for book lovers. Carlson Cares, the charitable program of The Carlson Law Firm, invited the Baytown community for a movie night underneath the stars featuring the film adaptation of one of Roald Dahl’s popular stories, Matilda. All attendees of Reading with Reels walked away with a copy of their own Matilda book.
In addition to the movie screening, concessions and Kona Ice were provided for those who joined Carlson Cares to snack on during the presentation. Additionally, other books from various reading levels were given out to children. In addition, there was an opportunity for the children present to show off their artistic side with a coloring contest, with one lucky kid walking out with an IFly gift card!
“One of the greatest barriers to literacy in children is book access,” said partner Kathryn Knotts. “ The average low-income family has fewer than five books in their home for children. This reduced access to books results in reduced and delayed reading readiness skills. As students enter school, this learning gap only continues to widen, resulting in lower-performing students who struggle with reading achievement. By providing access to books, this learning gap is reduced, and student achievement increases.”
Throughout the past five years, Carlson Cares has committed to helping students across Texas develop a passion for reading. Here at The Carlson Law Firm, we understand the importance of developing the pleasure of reading and how that can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, mental health, and well-being. Therefore, Carlson Cares has dedicated itself to providing resources to help combat literacy barriers across Texas, including having a Little Free Library at its principal office, awarding a Bilingual Texas high school teacher reading materials valued at $2,000 for her classroom, and gifting reading kits to students throughout the year.
“We are so glad we got to enjoy an evening with Baytown book enthusiasts,” said Knotts. “Seeing how well the Baytown community reacted to this event, Carlson Cares plans on having another Reading with Reels event in the fall. We are excited to host an event the Bryan community will enjoy.”
