LAREDO, Texas- To ring in the new year with the Laredo community, Carlson Cares, The Carlson Law Firm’s charitable program, gave away about 150 gifts to the Laredo community in honor of Three Kings Day.
The community had the opportunity to grab a toy bag, with toys ranging in age for 1-12. Gifts included Legos, Barbies, Indoor Hoover Soccer balls, and more! In addition, we were joined by Ozo Campos, and Cabezones for photo opportunities with Lego Batman and Lego Joker for the children.
“We are very thankful to be in the position to give back to our community in this event for our community,” partner Edna Elizondo said. “Since it was Three Kings Day, we thought organizing a toy giveaway would be the perfect way to celebrate the new year and day with our community. In addition, we wanted to ensure that each child would open at least one gift this holiday season, and I think we were able to help in those efforts.”
All toys were gone within the first hour of service. There were no requirements to receive a gift through the Tres Reyes Magos Sorteo de Juguete event besides the child being present.
Thank you to all who joined us!
What is Three Kings Day?
Three kings day is both a religious and cultural celebration that celebrates the revelation of God and his Son as human in Jesus Christ. It included the commemoration of his birth; the visit of the Magi; all of Jesus’ childhood events, his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptists, and even the miracle at the wedding at Cana in Galilee.
The holiday is known by various names across dozens of different cultures and countries and holds distinct traditions in each. The United States and Hispanic countries commemorate Three Kings day to honor their cultures and customs. For example, one tradition is for children to leave hay or grass out for the three kings in exchange for a gift. In Spain, children place a small shoe underneath a pillow with a gift wish list instead of grass.
In European homes, it is tradition for children to line up their shoes outside the house so that the three kings know where to leave gifts. In Mexico and South American countries, a staple dish of the holiday is “Rosca de Reyes,” an oval-shaped bread with dried fruit decorations and a baby Jesus figurine hidden inside. The tradition follows that whoever finds the figurine in their portion of the cake must make tamales for everyone on the Day of the Candles, which takes place February 2.
Countries that hold big celebrations include:
- Spain
- Colombia
- Dominic Republic
- Mexico
- Argentina
- Venezuela
- Puerto Rico Paraguay
- Cuba
In addition, parades and performances are typical in the celebration of the Three Kings Day.
